Using the Enneagram and Astrology to Know Our Selves
I’ve always been fascinated with human psychology. Understanding myself, my own motivations, my blocks, fears, subconscious patterns and behavior as well as those of others is something I find a great deal of motivation for and satisfaction in.
Over the past few years, I’ve found joy, solace and understanding in studying Astrology and the Enneagram to try to understand myself and those close to me. The through line with each system that never ceases to amaze, baffle and astound me is how they support and reinforce one another. For example - I’ve seen a lot of overlap with my own and others Moon signs in Astrology and our individual types in the Enneagram.
The Moon in astrology symbolizes our emotions, our intuition and our inner personal world, while our Enneagram type describes patterns in how we interpret the world and manage our emotions.
To illustrate the connection, I’ll use my Moon sign and Enneagram type. I have a Pisces Moon and am a 9 on the Enneagram. Pisces is known to be intuitive, creative, spiritual, and compassionate in its highest expression, but in its lower expression, it lacks boundaries, easily merges with others in ways that are self- negating, can disassociate and at times can be prone to addiction.
The 9 in the Enneagram holds these same traits. The 9 is known as the Peacemaker and wants to harmonize the environment. 9’s are generally optimistic, creative, able to easily empathize with others and to see the value in each person’s perspective. This though can come at the cost of self-forgetting and falling asleep to their own wants, needs and desires in order to maintain connection.
Yes, yes, and yes, haha. I have always been highly sensitive, empathetic, creative and lacking in strong boundaries - easily prone to people pleasing and lacking clarity around what I want and how to take clear action towards those desires.
Obviously these systems are far more nuanced and complex than what I’ve delved into here. My personality, just like yours is more complex, with layer upon layer of depth, which only serves to highlight our multi-dimensionality and mystery as humans. And yet, just one piece in each system can provide insight into our behaviors, subconscious patterns and motivations.
Astrology and the Enneagram provide us fertile ground to tap into our inherent gifts, AND insight into areas of growth, providing a road map to move into greater wholeness and cohesion within ourselves and our engagement with others and the world.
Time and time again they have helped me to see how truly Divinely designed and purposed each of our lives are. We are each part of the great tapestry of humanity. We have inherent gifts and challenges. And yet, those challenges can also be alchemized into gifts. We aren’t fixed or fated - we have free will and yet, it seems there is purpose in our divine DNA.
